The announcement was made at the same time as the Astros placed infielder Luis Guillorme (right hamstring strain) on the 10-day injured list.
Short, who turned 30 on May 29, was sent to the Astros’ Sugar Land Space Cowboys minor league team after he was one of the last cuts in spring training. He struggled at the plate during spring training, batting .121.
Short’s Performance with Sugar Land Space Cowboys
Short, who was playing at shortstop in the minors, had shown a lot of power for the Space Cowboys this season, smacking 12 home runs and driving in 35 runs. He was batting .211 in 256 at-bats.
Short sounded optimistic about his chances with Houston when he signed with the Astros earlier this year.
“I chose Houston because it was a great offer with a real opportunity to make a team and help them win,” Short told the Freeman on Jan. 8, 2025.
