The state of Colorado is preparing to launch its sixth area code — 748 — in less than two weeks, according to a statement released Wednesday by the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (CDRA).
Why the New Area Code?
According to CDRA:
There is a growing demand for new telephone numbers.
The Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) approved the implementation of the 748 area code.
The 748 code will overlay the existing 970 area code region, meaning it will serve the same geographic area.
When Will It Take Effect?
July 7, 2025: Customers in the 970 region may begin receiving 748 numbers when requesting new service or an additional line.
Late 2026: Large-scale use of 748 numbers is expected to ramp up significantly.
What Areas Are Affected?
The current 970 area code — and thus the future 748 overlay — serves several western and northern Colorado locations, including:
Aspen
Breckenridge
Durango
Estes Park
Fort Collins
Glenwood Springs
Grand Junction
Greeley
Loveland
Silverthorne
Steamboat Springs
Vail
The 748 area code will cover this exact same geographic area.
