Lake County K9 Drako Credited with Two Overnight Suspect Apprehensions in Libertyville and Waukegan
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Canine Drako is being credited with tracking down two suspects in separate incidents in Libertyville and Waukegan less than two hours apart. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday morning that Canine Drako had two successful overnight deployments.
First Apprehension: Libertyville Storage Facility Break-in
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said that K9 Drako was called to assist the Libertyville Police Department around 2:20 a.m. Wednesday. A man was seen jumping a fence at a storage facility in the 1900 block of Kelley Court in Libertyville.
Drako conducted a search and quickly identified a specific storage unit on the property. The sheriff’s office reported that the canine jumped on the door and began sniffing vigorously around the seams. Officers subsequently opened the unlocked unit and discovered the suspect sleeping on a couch inside.
The individual was turned over to the Libertyville Police Department for further investigation, according to Deputy Chief Covelli.
Second Apprehension: Waukegan Domestic Battery Suspect
Less than two hours later, Drako and his handler, Deputy Roxana Stancioiu, responded to an incident in Waukegan around 3:55 a.m. A person had committed a domestic battery in the 38700 block of North Sheridan Road in Beach Park and fled in a vehicle before sheriff’s deputies arrived.
The suspect’s vehicle was located in the 400 block of Corey Avenue in Waukegan. From the vehicle, Drako initiated a track. The sheriff’s office stated that the canine led deputies and officers to a fenced yard, indicating heavily near a hard-to-reach area by a fence and garage.
Officers skillfully maneuvered around the tight space and successfully located the suspect curled up behind the garage. The man was taken into custody without incident and subsequently charged with domestic battery.
“In two overnight deployments, K9 Drako showed exactly why he’s a valuable part of our team,” the sheriff’s office stated, praising the canine’s efforts.
